"TAI PAN" BY JAMES CLAVELL This novel opens the history of Hong Kong, but, of course, from author’s view and his adaptation. 6 months 1841. The first opium war. Chine try to ban Great Britain’s trades of opium. After conclusion of a peace treaty, Great Britain get an empty island – Hong Kong. And start to build there. Traders are the most interested in this event. Main character the trader (in Chinese is tai pan) Dirk Struan knows a lot about China and its culture. This knowledge helps him to solve many problems and make good deals. I really admire the author’s attention to Asian lives and recommend this book for historical fiction lovers. "JANE EYER" BY CHARLOTTE BRONTE A worthy example of English classic literature. It is a first-person narrative about girl’s life, her becoming a woman. This story is really personal and touching. Jane Eyer is very brave and determined, ready for actions and different events. She is an orphan. Her childhood was in an aunt's house, where jealous and cruel people lived. Then she studied in a hard boarding school and worked as a governess in a house of a loved one, ran away from there because of the terrible past of her chosen one. Every period was complicated for her, but she coped and found happiness. During reading, you can think about themes for all times: woman’s role and desires, freedom and justice, feelings and mind. P.S. I tried to write a reading diary for the first time and it became very useful. I continue to do it in the future and, maybe, one day write more about this practice. THIS YEAR TRIP TO THE NORTH OF LENINGRAD REGION AND CARELIA Last week my boyfriend and I had a car trip to the near places. We started from Vyborg and finished in Sortavala. We attended a movie festival in the first location. Its name is "The window to Europe". Spectators could watch new fiction and documentary movies and animations by Russian directors. This works sometimes were looked raw and unfinished, but there were good things also. The next stop was "Сozy fir trees". It is a recreation center between two already mentioned cities. We spent around 3-4 days there and just had some relax like going to a wooden bathroom with a real soaring, boating and swimming in the Vuoksa River, mushrooming and breathing fresh air. It was wonderful and free time. The final station was Sortavala. We planed to visit Valaam Monastery, but it could not be done. So we only tasted different fish dishes and went to some museums. To sum up, it was a nice summer trip to feel some calmness and adventurism.
