Miriam is a fine teacher. She knows her material well -- German grammar, vocabulary and idiom -- and is able to help in conversation because she is fluent in English and so can quickly come up with the word or expression in German that I am looking for. She frequently asks questions which lead the conversation in a different direction than that anticipated, thereby challenging me to use different vocabulary, unprepared. She makes good suggestions of literary works, in my case novels and (non-fiction) essays. She has a good knowledge of literary criticism and so we have had long discussions about, for instance, the verbal styles of the protagonists in Fontane's 'Effi Briest.' She proposed that I study a fairly advanced grammar, Helbig & Buscha's 'Übungsgrammatik Deutsch': tough going but I have learned a great deal. The lessons are always interesting and plenty of fun.
