As a teacher I am encouraging, and try to activate my students to use as much Finnish as possible. People usually tell me they can be themselves in my company. This no stress state helps them to express themselves better in Finnish as the brain has no reason to activate the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight/freeze response) which would compromise higher brain functions. I concentrate on speaking activation and encourage the student express herself/himself as much as possible in Finnish. My approach is to ask questions and adjust the level of communication to the student's proficiency level.Fins lessen
