Hi, my name is Gerald. I was born in Austria but also living in Berlin (Germany) for many years, so I know both the Austrian as well as the german German. A couple of years ago, I relocated to Peru, where I'm teaching German on italki full time. Apart from languages, I'm interested in health, sport, yoga, traveling, cooking, current affairs, economics and nature. I'm easy to talk to and only interrupt when it's really necessary.Me as a Teacher
I'm a professional German teacher certified by the renown Goethe Institut. In my experience the biggest problem with learning a language is that the students think they need to get it perfectly right every time they say something. This stops you from talking freely, and makes you fall short of your full potential. In my lessons, I will encourage you to speak without being afraid of making mistakes. I offer different kinds of lessons, some follow a course structure, others are only focused on conversation. Of course it's also possible to mix a structural approach with free speaking.My lessons & teaching style
I offer both structured courses based on books (great for beginners), as well as conversational lessons with or without material but always with corrections and tips. I love teaching 1:1 because we don't need to make compromises and can focus on exactly what's right for you personally. No matter if you wanna go from zero to fluent with a structured course, if you just wanna brush up your german skills from high school, or if you need some conversation practice next to your full time course, we'll always create the class that is best for you individually :)My teaching material

I had no prior knowledge of German before starting lessons with Gerald. Our lessons are very effective and he often customizes it to what I want to learn. When I am having difficultly with grammar lessons or remembering a word, Gerald always reassures me and is very patient. I have learned so much about the language and culture in such a short period of time. If there are any American beginners I cannot recommend Gerald enough, this has been such a rewarding process thus far!

I have been learning German with Gerald for more than a year and couldn't be more satisfied. During this time he has helped me face my fear of speaking German by gently assisting me while I speak during our always enjoyable discussions. Gerald is very supportive and kind and there is always the right balance to fit personal needs at the moment, with some days being more focused on speaking than others. It has overall been a very enjoyable experience with a lot of progress and I can only recommend learning German with Gerald.

I strongly recommend Gerald as a teacher for learning German. I found Gerald after experimenting with 3 professional teachers and group classes. With Gerald I learned from 0 knowledge in German to B1-B2, passing B1 Goethe at ~90% spontaneously and with ease. The classes are always engaging. I articulate complex ideas without being afraid of making mistakes. I am gently corrected when needed. We do both conversations about the topics that concern us and course book exercises. I am writing this in English for those who are looking for a German teacher to start learning 😊

I am absolutely thrilled with my lessons with Gerald. He is laser-focused during our sessions and always eager to help. He seems to have a perfect grasp of the level at which he should speak to ensure I understand and learn effectively. Beyond that, he’s happy to answer all my questions throughout the lesson, as my German knowledge still has gaps. My only regret is not finding him sooner! 10/10 would highly recommend.
